ABSTRACT:
Recent increases in sport-associated violence are discussed in terms of aggression theory, and the concept of catharsis is analysed and broadened in an attempt to provide a more appropriate framework for understanding the conflict between youth and social institutions. Relates aggression, frustration aggression and social learning theory to the occurrence of spectator violence in professional soccer in England. Discusses the place of football in British culture and the meaning of football to youth.
