ABSTRACT:
Investigates the concepts of motive and stimulus (external and internal drives) in relation to sports activity, and attempts to classify them into Activity and Passivity. In 1972, data were collected from doctors and scientists from 18 research institutes in the USSR for examination of respondents' motives for athletic pursuits. Motives were ranked according to the dominant force of each group in connection with physical culture and sport. Results indicate that motives are integrally related to the very essence of physical culture and sports for research workers.
