ABSTRACT:
The three sets of Job illustrations here reproduced in facsimile, according to almost all recent scholars post-date the engravings of 1823-6 and can with some certainty be connected with the household of John Linnell. The first set, known as the New Zealand set from the country of their discovery ... are finished watercolour drawings. The Collins set which is complete and the incomplete Fitzwilliam set of four engravings are hand coloured impressions of the published engravings"--P. 9. Blake's engravings were published in 1826 (t.p. dated 1825) under title: Illustrations of the book of Job. The New Zealand set (originals in collection of Paul Mellon) and the Collins set (originals in a private collection) each consist of t.p. and 21 plates. The incomplete set consists of plates 11, 15, 18, and 20 (originals in Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge). The text volume and 3 portfolios, each containing 1 set, are issued in a case (40 cm.). "This publication ... is limited to 387 copies. 22 copies lettered A-V contain an additional set of plates together with progressives, stencils and other material relating to the production of the hand-coloured plates. 250 copies numbered 1-250. 50 copies numbered i-l. 65 copies numbered I-LXV are reserved by the William Blake Trust"--Verso of t.p.
