EDITORIAL STATEMENT:
afrika spectrum, first published in 1966 by the Institute of African Affairs in Hamburg, is an inter-disciplinary fully refereed journal (indexed by Thomson's ISI/SSCI) focusing on social science dealing with Africa. The journal is dedicated to promote a deeper understanding of African peoples and cultures. Therefore, it aims not just at academics and students of African affairs, but also at general readers and practitioners with a concern for contemporary Africa.
Since more than three decades afrika spectrum provides regularly, three times a year, profound analyses of current issues of political, social and economic life, culture and development in Africa south of the Sahara. It is the only German academic journal exclusively devoted to this continent. Since 2003 the journal collaborates closely with the Association of Africanists in Germany (Vereinigung von Afrikanisten in Deutschland, VAD). Furthermore the journal provides an unique possibility in the German speaking hemisphere, for authors and readers alike, to publish and discuss their findings in their mother tongue. Nonetheless, contributions in English or French, notably from African countries, are also welcome. Regularly articles included are on varied topics, but the journal also publishes special issues devoted to specific subjects, such as Islam in Africa, the CFA-zone, friendship, or African political parties. Also included are historical studies that illuminate current events in the continent. In addition, the journal carries debates, short contributions and book reviews. Abstracts in English and French, key words for each article, and an annual authors, country and subject index are provided as well.
All contributions are original pieces not published elsewhere before. The journal invites notes and comments on the articles it publishes, as well as reviews of books in its field of study. Submissions from Africa-based scholars are particularly encouraged. Detailed author submission guidelines are provided in our notes for contributors , the Authors’ Charter, and in additional information sheets for authors on the copyright policy of the journal and on the referee process, available on demand or on our website.
