Her research was focused on adverse drug reaction reporting through pharmaceutical companies. After completing her residency she took a position as a staff pharmacist at North York Branson Hospital (North York, Ontario) where her clinical responsibilities included the psychiatry and geriatrics units.
She completed her Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan) in 1998, following which she began a one-year post-doctoral residency in geriatrics through Campbell University (North Carolina). Dr. Wiens was also a clinical instructor at Campbell University School of Pharmacy while completing her geriatrics training at The Sticht Center for Aging, Duke University, and Dorothea Dix State Psychiatric Hospital.
Dr. Wiens' research focus during her residency was on the use of non-prescription medications and use of preventive therapies in elderly Medicaid (social assistance) patients in North Carolina. Dr. Wiens joined the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Alberta, in August 1999.
She has a clinical practice at the Seniors Clinic, and acts as a consultant to the inpatient Geriatrics Assessment Team at University of Alberta Hospital in conjunction with the Capital Health Authority.
