POSITION(S) / JOB TITLE(S):
Professor
AREAS OF EXPERTISE:
chronic disease;blindness;The framework for my research is rooted in the belief that blindness and many chronic diseases/disabilities are social conditions which continue to be affected by negative public attitudes, despite evidence of increasing integration of disadvantaged populations in society. understanding the process of how individuals learn to live with loss of vision, trends in public attitudes toward blind persons, blindness as a stigmatized condition, the portrayal of blindness in print and electronic media, the ethics of imagery, and barriers to integration. My current research centers around the portrayal of blind persons in the print and electronic media from 1900 to 1995 and the ethics of shaping public attitudes by portraying appealing, yet inaccurate images. We have over 500 documents which we are analyzing, representing classic and popular literature, education and health policy documents, legal holdings, records of rehabilitation facilities (including special schools throughout North America), reports, newspapers and community publications, and popular and professional magazines. As part of my broader interest on living with chronic disease, I have an interest in the effectiveness of complementary remedies in the management of the symptoms of disease. We have just completed a pilot study on the tolerability of elk velvet antler in persons with rheumatoid arthritis;health outcomes
