POSITION(S) / JOB TITLE(S):

|
Professor |

Work in this laboratory is centered around problems associated with cell and tissue interactions during early embryonic development. This research is concerned with the physiology of cell death and of cellular movements and the ways in which cell behavior is controlled by extracellular materials such as basement membranes, fibronectin and collagen, and by growth factors. Studies are made of intercellular contacts, cell surfaces and cell adhesion, all of which are important in determining the organization of cells during the morphogenetic movements of development. Studies include an analysis of the roles of TGF(beta) in early development and the possible relationship of embryonic expression of TNF(alpha) and focal adhesion kinase (FAK) to programmed cell death, or apoptosis. Apoptosis has been studied in embryos during gastrulation, and during lens and heart development.
Techniques
The tissues studied are from the chick and mouse embryos and the techniques include: transmission and scanning electron microscopy, immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization, Western blotting, tissue culture, microsurgery, and time-lapse video and cinemicrography.
