Tasks and Organisation At the initiatives of the Afrika Verein (Africa Association) and academics from the University of Hamburg, the Institute of African Affairs (IAA; Institut für Afrika-Studien) was founded in February 1963 under its original name, the "German Institute for African Research". In August 1975, the institute was transformed into a foundation under its current denomination "Institute of African Affairs". After having been associated with three other institutes engaged in area studies (the German Institute for Middle East Studies, the Institute for Ibero-American Studies, and the Institute of Asian Affairs) for many years, in 2006 one single institute was formed: GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies. The IAA takes pride in being the only institute in the Federal Republic of Germany that continuously and exclusively pursues current political, economic, and social developments in the entire region of Africa south of the Sahara. As a consequence, it has a natural responsibility for co-ordinating the dispersed and specialised research and documentation activities concerning Africa that are carried out in Germany. The IAA aims at contributing to the analysis of current political, economic, and social problems in Africa and suggesting possible solutions to specific selected problems - by means of research, documentation, and information analysis - and by continuous monitoring of the political, economic, and social conditions and developments. The work of the Institute focuses on contemporary and practical issues. The approach is inter-disciplinary with emphasis given to political, economic, and sociological questions and methods. The IAA makes its research findings, documentation, discussion papers and various other materials available for general public use and for private interest groups. The Institute also fulfils an important function as a centre for information, discussions and co-ordination for members of the Africa research "community" in Germany. In summer 2002 the Institute was admitted to the European network of Africanist studies centres AEGIS (Africa-Europe Group for Interdisciplinary Studies).
