Legal Order The Munich School of Philosophy is a canonically constituted Faculty of Philosophy founded by the Jesuit Order. The School is recognized as such under civil law, and is accorded academic rights and privileges equivalent to those of state universities in Germany. The legal and financial body of the School are the German Jesuits, a corporation under public law.
Legal Status By decree of the Sacra Congregatio pro Institutione Catholica, Rome, on June 7 and October 25, 1971, and with the accreditation of the Bavarian Ministry of Education and Culture on September 24, 1971, the School was opened to all eligible students of philosophy. The School can confer, upon completion of the academic requirements, the degrees "Bakkalaureat in Philosophie", "Magister Artium in Philosophie" (equivalent to the ecclesiastical "Licentia"), and the "Dr. Phil." On July 24, 1990, the School was authorized by the Bavarian legislature to confer the "Habilitation" (title of Full Professor).
Qualification for the academic degree titles "Magister Artium", "Dr. phil.", and "Dr.phil.habil." is achieved by successful completion of the examinations designated by the Munich School of Philosophy. These fully accord with the regulations put forth by the Bavarian Ministry of Education, Cultural Affairs, Sciences, and Arts. The degrees are equivalent to those conferred by state universities. The School of Philosophy, which is a private academic institution maintained by the Jesuit Order, is accredited as such under State Articles 108-112 BayHSchG."
