A Lang-Grant college founded in 1891, West Virginia State College attained national prominence as an instiution of higher education for blacks, and among other specialties, it continues to serve as a center of black culture. Voluntary desegregation in l954 created a distinctive "living laboratory of human relations," attracting a racially and culturally diverse student body, faculty and staff. The college cherishes its unique history and its reputation for safeguarding academic freedom, for being innovative in its scholastic programs, and for removing barriers to education and leadership for women, minorities, and the disabled. The College's primary mission focuses on strong baccalaureate and associate-degree programs in the arts and sciences and in professional studies.
