Joining getCITED is free and only requires a couple of minutes of your time.
While you can access most of its features without being a member, you need to be a
member in order to add to and edit its contents. And because getCITED requires
the cooperation of the entire academic community to realize its vision, we sincerely
hope you will consider becoming a member.
To become a member, you can either click on the Join getCITED link at the
top of the page or you can click on Add Content and then Identities.
Either way, the effect is the same. After doing so, you will be asked to proceed
through the following steps:
-
Step 1: Enter identity name
This limited bit of information will be used to search the database for an existing
identities with names similar to yours. We do this because getCITED allows
members to enter information on other people's behalf, which means that someone
may have already created an identity for you.
-
Step 2: Check for existing identities
At this point you may be provided with a list of identities from which to choose. If
not, you can click on CREATE IDENTITY to begin doing just that. However, if there
is a list of identities, you will want to peruse it in search of your name. If you find
that your identity already exists, then at this point you simply need to click on the
CLAIM button to proceed directly to Step 4.
-
Step 3: Enter identity details
This is where you enter the bulk of the information about yourself. The vast majority of it
is optional, so please don't enter any information here you don't want to share with others.
That said, rest assured that getCITED has absolutely no intention of ever making its
members information available to other organizations.
-
Step 3b: Select address region(s)
If you entered a county for either your permanent or temporary address in Step 4, you will
then be asked to indicate the region in which those addresses are located. Otherwise, you will
bypass this step.
-
Step 4: Enter user information
The information entered up to this point comprises your "public" identity and the steps described
above are the same ones you will go through should you ever decide to create an identity on
behalf of someone else (e.g., for a deceased scholar). This next step, however, only occurs when
become a member, whether that be through claiming an existing identity, or by creating a new one
through the steps just described. The most important part of this step is selecting a user name
and password with which to access the site. Once you've done this, you will be taken to the Login
screen and you can start making use of getCITED's powerful features.
After you've completed the foregoing steps, your new getCITED identity will be displayed. At
this point you may want to Edit your identity and, in particular, indicate your institutional or
organizational affiliation, and possibly your Alma Mater. Nevertheless, you can do that at any time
so, if you'd prefer, you can simply start putting getCITED to work at this point and worry
about editing your Identity some other time.
