Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

DESCRIPTION:

* The Department of chemistry came into existence in 1960 with an initial strength of 10 M.Sc students and 7 faculty members. Now the M.sc. intake has gone up to 36 and has a sanctioned faculty strength of 23. * Unique features of PG education in Chemistry is that there are compulsory courses in Modeling, Simulation and Computer Application, Radiochemistry and Technical communication, not available elsewhere. * The department proposes to pursue interdisciplinary research on contemporary problems of chemical Science relating to industrial, rural and agricultural development and Utilization of industrial wastes for generation of energy, chemicals and biopolymers will also be attempted to prevent environmental degradation. * More than 250 of our students have been awarded PhD. degrees and more than 1000 research papers have been published. * A special lecture on Fundamentals on Single Crystal X-Ray structure analysis by Dr.Berenhard Walford of the department of chemistry Chemnitz University Germany on 24 september 2004 The Department of chemistry came into existence in 1960 with an initial strength of 10 M.Sc students and 7 faculty members. Now the M.sc. intake has gone up to 36 and has a sanctioned faculty strength of 23. Admission is offered strictly on the basis of merit prepared from an All India level entrance Test. Provision for reservation of SC/STS as per state government policy exists. Last year entrance test was held at seven different centers and this year the number of centers is likely to go up to attract more students on a countrywide basis. The department has been offering specialization in Analytical, Inorganic, organic and Physical chemistry. One of the unique features of PG education in Chemistry is that there are compulsory courses in Modeling, Simulation and computer Application, Radiochemistry and Technical communication, not available elsewhere. Besides, a student selects three departmental elective courses from a number of courses such as - Molecular symmetry and Crystal structure, molecular spectroscopy, coordination chemistry, advanced organic chemistry-III, Electroanaytical Chemistry, Proteins & Polypeptides, Kinetics & Photo-Chemistry, Polymer chemistry. The students are also required to opt for two outside elective courses available in Science, engineering, Humanities or Management Departments. Each M.Sc. (Final) student is also required to carry out a laboratory scale 0project work, submit a dissertation and present his work in a seminar. These have bearings on the employment opportunities of the students. During the 9th plan period, the department proposes to pursue interdisciplinary research on contemporary problems of chemical Science relating to industrial, rural and agricultural development. Utilization of industrial wastes for generation of energy, chemicals and biopolymers will also be attempted to prevent environmental degradation. More than 250 of our students have been awarded PhD. degrees and more than 1000 research papers have been published.
