School of International and Community Studies

Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology

DESCRIPTION:

The School of International and Community Studies (ICS) brings together a community of practice focusing on the social, cultural and economic relationships between globalisation, cultural change and community wellbeing. It encompasses teaching and research emerging from a range of humanities and social science disciplines including cultural studies, sociology, criminology, political economy, communications, international relations, language studies, interpreting and translating, and community development. This breadth of experience allows each part of the School to develop interdisciplinary approaches to understanding varied forms of globalisation and their effects on communities. The School has successfully brought together a range of TAFE and higher education programs and research activities that focus on this local–global nexus. The complementary balance between these spheres of activity is one of the School’s major strengths. The School’s diverse teaching and research programs all aim to develop greater understanding of the ways in which local practices are being transformed by a range of global processes. Consequently, there is a common focus across the School’s range of activities on: * the impact of global, regional and international developments on local practices, especially in the areas of social wellbeing and criminal justice * the growing importance of cultural and linguistic diversity as it exists both within and between communities * the need to find new ways to maintain and strengthen social connectedness as older forms of community are challenged * teaching programs that embed such concerns in vocational development and professional practice, while the School’s applied research seeks to influence the way these issues are conceptualised and engaged with.
