DESCRIPTION:
The School of Business at the University of Southern Maine is one of New England’s best business schools and the only business school in southern Maine accredited by AACSB International. Professional accreditation by AACSB International is sought by business schools worldwide but has been achieved by only about one third of all institutions. AACSB accreditation standards require:
a superior faculty that is committed to teaching, research and service,
a rigorous and relevant curriculum that grounds students in the fundamentals but also gives them the flexibility to specialize in the areas that interest them most,
strong student support services including a high quality library, the latest technology, and knowledgeable advising.
Just as important is that AACSB Accreditation is not a one-time achievement. To remain accredited, schools must demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement backed up with on-going self-assessment and submit to regular reviews. Because of the rigors of this process, degrees from AACSB accredited schools are more widely recognized than those from unaccredited programs.
Our commitment to quality is particularly evident in the partnerships that exist between professor and student. In our classrooms, students learn the fundamentals, the latest theories and the best practices of management. However, traditional classroom instruction is only part of the education process at the USM School of Business. What makes us special among business schools is the manner in which we extend the partnership theme to the practical application of learning, through internships, business leaders guest lecturing in our classrooms, and, perhaps most importantly, teams of students and faculty working with companies around the state to assist in approaching solutions to real world, often crucial, business issues. This combination of latest theory and practical application may explain why so many of the region’s top executives are graduates of our program.
