DESCRIPTION:
Communication Studies is offered as an interdisciplinary linked Double-Major Honours degree and a Specialized Honours degree. The four-year undergraduate Honours Programs, housed within the Division of Social Science, provides students with a comprehensive understanding of traditional forms of mass communication (print, radio, film, television) as well as interpersonal and organization communications. It also examines communication networks (including the Internet and wireless networks), digital media (such as interactive entertainment), and services (such as electronic commerce and social activism).
The courses offered by the Communication Studies Program encompass four thematic areas which are representative of the primary disciplinary approaches within the field of communication studies: Media, Culture and Society; Politics and Policy; Interpersonal and Organizational Communication; and Critical Technology Studies.
Communication Studies objectives are to create graduates who have acquired skills in communication analysis, understand the increasingly complex world of communications, and can clearly communicate their knowledge. This education is useful for careers in media, policy, planning, management, and research. The program also provides the background for graduate studies in communications, law, corporate communications, advertising, commerce, journalism and new media.
Finally, students who wish to complement their university education in communication studies with more technical or "hands on" skills may apply to the Joint Program in Communication Arts through the Faculty of Arts Advising Centre. This Joint Program allows students to work concurrently towards a university degree and a diploma in one of the four areas of study either at Seneca College (Creative Advertising; Broadcasting: Radio, TV, Journalism;) or at Centennial College (Corporate Communication; Book and Magazine Publishing). Please contact John Mahaffy at the Advising Centre, S319 Ross, 416 736-5022 for further information on this.
