The University of Washington department of Women Studies was founded in 1970 as an interdisciplinary academic unit within the College of Arts and Sciences, and was awarded departmental status in 1996. The department is noted for its rigorous undergraduate thesis requirements amd offers programs ranging from minors to Ph.D. degrees.
