DESCRIPTION:
The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) most recently assessed the Department's research in 2003 at grade 6*. (Based on an assessment in both 2001 and 1996 of 5*) This is the highest grade possible. HEFCE has also designated the Department's teaching as 'Excellent'.
Publications such as The Times' Good University Guide consistently rank the Department among the top five in the UK. One study (Journal of Systems and Software, volume 39, pages 83-88, 1997) ranks York as the seventh best institution in the world for research in systems and software engineering, and the only European institution among the top fifteen.
